Chapter 13 Procedure
With this chapter I suggest we vary somewhat the
activities we use to learn Latin.
The focus or objective is still learning to read the Latin in this
chapter easily. It's not possible
to do that without having a good grasp of the vocabulary, forms and grammar
introduced and used in the chapter.
It may also be necessary to review and reinforce your understanding of
the vocabulary, forms and grammar introduced and used in preceding chapters. Instead, however, of just working
through each Lectio, and doing the exercises, and going over them, and taking a
quiz, as has become the pattern, I suggest we broaden the range of activities
you can use to achieve the objective, and use a portfolio to document your
progress.
What you can use to assemble a portfolio can include
anything by means of which you come to an understanding of the material in the
chapter and which will verify your mastery of the material in the chapter:
a.
pictures, cartoons, storyboards or other visual material
b.
performance (skit, sketch, dramatization) of something in the
chapter or something you create (alone or with another or others) out of the
material in the chapter (including Colloquium XIII)
c.
an original story using the material in the chapter
d.
a summary in Latin of the contents of the chapter
e.
exercises (McMann; Oerberg)
f.
vocabulary development sheet for all the new words
g.
your own questions and answers about the chapter
h.
power-point
i.
poster
j.
test/quizzes
We
will work through the chapter together as before, but I will allocate class
time to your individual or group work in trying to master the chapter and to
develop a portfolio. You don't have to include everything listed or even most
of it. Spend time on whatever is
most useful to you in learning everything you need to know in order to
understand the material in the chapter thoroughly. Most likely you'll also need to set aside some time outside
of class to work on this.
